Tehran, Iran:

Iran on Saturday welcomed a UN Security Council vote rejecting the US proposal to extend an arms embargo to the Islamic Republic, saying its enemy had “never been so isolated”.

“In the 75-year history of the United Nations, America has never been so isolated,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Abbas Mousavi tweeted hours after only two of the Council’s 15 members left. supported a US resolution to extend the embargo.

“Despite all the travel, pressure and hawking, the United States was only able to mobilize a small country (to vote) with them,” he added, referring to the failed efforts of the secretary of US State Mike Pompeo to rally support for a US resolution. .

The Iranian National Television website said the only other country supporting the US resolution was the Dominican Republic, citing anonymous sources.

The embargo on conventional arms sales to Iran is set to expire on Oct. 18 under a resolution that blessed the 2015 nuclear deal between the Islamic Republic and world powers.

“Last night Iran’s active #diplomacy, along with the legal strength of (the nuclear deal), beat the US again in the Security Council,” Mousavi tweeted.

President Donald Trump unilaterally withdrew the United States from the nuclear deal in 2018, escalating tensions between longtime enemies.
