Tehran, Iran:

An Iranian accused of spying on US and Israeli intelligence was executed on Monday, according to the official Iranian news agency IRIB.

Last month, the judiciary said Mahmoud Mousavi-Majd, arrested in 2018, had spied on former Revolutionary Guard commander Qassem Soleimani, however adding that the case was unrelated to Soleimani’s murder more early this year.

On January 3, an American drone in Iraq killed Soleimani, head of the Quds Force of the Revolutionary Guards.

Washington had accused Soleimani of orchestrating attacks by militias aligned on Iran against American forces in the region.

The execution comes at a time when millions of Iranians have taken to social media to protest the death sentences handed down to three men accused of participating in anti-government protests last November.

Their executions have been suspended, one of their lawyers, Babak Paknia, announced on Sunday.

Human rights activists said the sentences imposed on the three men were aimed at intimidating would-be protesters.

Witnesses said security forces fired tear gas last Thursday to disperse demonstrators in the southwestern town of Behbahan, who were protesting over economic issues but also the death sentences handed down to the three men. .

The Farsi hashtag “Do not execute” has been tweeted millions of times over the past week.
