Interior Minister Amit Shah tested negative for coronavirus, his BJP colleague and MP Manoj Tiwari tweeted today, nearly a week after the interior minister was hospitalized with COVID-19 very contagious. Mr. Shah is recovering at Medanta Hospital in Haryana’s Gurugram near Delhi.
Extensive contact tracing was carried out and anyone who came into contact with the Home Secretary was asked to isolate themselves.
Mr. Shah, 55, took part in a cabinet meeting last Wednesday, which was attended by all key ministers, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.
All safety standards, including social distancing, were met at the crucial meeting, where the National Education Policy or NEP was approved.
Union Minister Jitendra Singh tweeted that he was “relieved” to learn that Mr. Shah had tested negative.

Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Governor of Tamil Nadu Banwarilal Purohit and Chief Minister of Karnataka BS Yediyurappa were a few other top leaders who have tested positive in recent times. Mr. Chouhan recovered after spending more than 10 days in the hospital.
A record one-day jump of 64,399 coronavirus patients pushed India’s COVID-19 tally beyond the 21 lakh mark, the health ministry said this morning, adding that more than 14 , 8 lakh patients have recovered so far.
A total of 43,379 covid-related deaths have been recorded to date; 861 deaths have been recorded since yesterday. With the latest increase, the number of coronaviruses in the country reached 21,53,011 cases, of which 6,28,747 are active cases. India’s recovery rate stood at 68.78 percent this morning, down from 68.32 percent yesterday.
