New Delhi:

The Indo-Tibetan border police, who guard the LAC with China, have decided to launch the very first “fitness class for couples” for their officers and their spouses as part of a unique project to create infrastructure focused on fitness on its campuses across the country.

The initiative is an original idea of the Director General (DG) SS Deswal of the ITBP and is also reproduced in the Border Security Force (BSF), as he also directs the force of about 2.5 lakh responsible for monitoring the Indian fronts with Pakistan and Bangladesh.

The two forces are also working on a “ stomachless 2020 ” plan to ensure that the cases of fat and obese officers and soldiers are controlled and that these vital paramilitary forces are combat-capable.

The ITBP, raised in the aftermath of the Chinese aggression in 1962, has approximately 90,000 men and is trained in mountain warfare along the 3,488 km real control line (LAC) with China.

Deswal told PTI that a week-long “ couples fitness class’ ‘will soon be launched at the ITBP officers’ academy in the popular mountain resort of Mussoorie, Uttarakhand.

“The spouse is the partner of a lifetime and their good health is important for a person to lead a happy and joyful life, especially after retirement when the body ages.”

“While our officers stay away from their families for a long time, the health problems of their better half are sometimes overlooked,” said the CEO.

Therefore, he said, we have decided to organize a physical training program for the officer and his spouse and it will soon be launched in batches.

The fitness class for spouses, mostly spouses, will be a bit lighter than what will be provided to their husbands, he said.

These programs will also be carried out in stages for the jawans, he said.

Regarding the “stomachless” mission, the DG said: “We have conducted several training programs for commanders of the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) and below in these forces and others will be conducted.”

A senior officer said that Deswal himself had attended the closing ceremony of at least four of these courses in the recent past and also participated in the “ 42 km in 7 hours walk ” exercise.

Earlier this year, the 58-year-old Indian Police Service (IPS) officer completed a 100 km brisk walk from Bikaner to Jodhpur in Rajasthan to spread the message of “ Fit India ” and continued these outdoor activities.

The Haryana executive officer from 1984 is passionate about walking and fitness.

The DG said that he had also assembled a team of officers in these forces to create infrastructure with two things in mind: the physical condition of the force and the families of the troops.

We will have more family infrastructure in our camps so that troops and officers can house their families for a period of time, said Deswal.

To set up a fitness program, we create “ open gymnasiums ” in our camps where exercise equipment is placed and anchored under the open sky and multi-purpose walkways are laid which can be used by the troops and their families to walk, run and bike, he said.

“We have large campuses, many of which are spread over an area of about 70 to 80 acres, and multi-use trails all around their periphery so that they can not only be used for patrolling by camp security personnel but by others for jogging and fitness racing, “said Mr. Deswal.

We want to make sure that our officers, jawans and their families are happy so that they are motivated to make the task of keeping the country’s internal security grid intact, he said.

Deswal was also questioned about the current situation of COVID-19 in these two large forces, its decision to take over the creation of the country’s very first quarantine center in the ITBP camp in Delhi and to order the movement troops join their units. after locking.

“I am not a friend of the good weather of the country but a friend of the bad weather. I must be the first to undertake difficult tasks when a disaster of this magnitude strikes, ie the pandemic of coronavirus” , did he declare. .

The DG said he was initially doubtful that he had accepted the task of setting up the 1,000-bed ITBP quarantine center in the Chhawla region southwest of Delhi, as this could lead to cases of infection in force, but his team of doctors, paramedics and sanitation workers did a “great job” in treating and removing about 1,200 people, including 42 foreigners who were brought to India on special flights evacuation of Wuhan to China and Italy after the COVID-19 epidemic a few months ago.

It is a small contribution from the ITBP in the battle of COVID-19, he said.

The DG stated that COVID-19 recoveries in these two forces are more than active cases and that there is no reason to worry.

According to the latest data, the two forces have reported at least 795 cases of coronavirus, of which 649 have recovered. There have been four coronavirus-related deaths in these forces.
