Indo-American doctor Atul Gawande, who was included in the new transitional coronavirus advisory board of US President-elect Joe Biden on Monday, said he was grateful and honored to be invited to serve and help put end to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The 55-year-old Boston-based surgeon, known for his writings and books in the medical field, said he was convinced the virus could be brought under control and that lives and livelihoods could be saved.
“I am grateful and honored to have been invited to serve and help end this pandemic. We have spread uncontrollably right now. But I have no doubts that we can bring the virus under control, save lives and livelihood, and bringing people together again, ”Dr Gawande tweeted.
A surgeon at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, he is also a professor at Harvard Medical School and professor of health policy and management at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.

Gawande was a senior adviser in the US Department of Health and Human Services under former President Bill Clinton. Prior to joining medical school, Gawande had participated in Bill Clinton’s presidential campaign. Previously, he was a senior advisor in the Department of Health and Human Services to the Clinton administration.
In 2007, Dr Gawande led the World Health Organization’s global effort to reduce surgical deaths.
Gawande is a writer for The New Yorker and has written four books, including “Being Mortal,” which deals with the subject of end-of-life care.
In 2020, after two years as CEO, he was named President of Haven, a healthcare company focused on improving health outcomes, the patient experience and the costs of care.
Gawande’s father, Atmaram Gawande, born in Maharashtra, and his mother Sushila Gawande, originally from Gujarat, met in New York while studying medicine. They got married and moved to Athens, Ohio to practice as doctors.
Born in Brooklyn and raised in Ohio, Gawande went to Stanford where he studied biology and politics, then was a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford, where he received his Masters in Philosophy, Politics and Economics in 1989.
His first book, Complications: A Surgeon’s Notes on an Imperfect Science, was a finalist for the 2002 National Book Award.
The Transiton Covid-19 Advisory Committee is co-chaired by Former FDA Commissioner Dr David Kessler, Former Surgeon General Dr Vivek Murthy and Dr Marcella Nunez-Smith, Associate Professor of Medicine and Epidemiology at Yale.
In a statement, the Biden-Harris Transition announced the formation of the COVID-19 Transition Advisory Committee, a team of leading public health experts who will advise President-elect Biden, Vice President-elect Harris and COVID staff -19 of the transition.
The Council’s leading scientists and public health experts will consult with national and local authorities to determine the necessary public health and economic measures to bring the virus under control, to provide immediate assistance to working families, to address persistent racial and ethnic disparities, and to reopen our schools and businesses in a safe and efficient manner.
