New York:

Before the June 17 elections for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), India said its presence in the global forum would help bring the philosophy of “ Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam ” (the world is a family) to the world.

India, whose candidacy has been approved by the Asia-Pacific group, made up of 55 countries, has released a video retracing its journey at the United Nations.

“India, candidate approved by the Asia-Pacific Group for the non-permanent seat on the Security Council for the mandate 2021-2022. A historical perspective of India at the flag of the United Nations. A vote for India is a vote for transparency, credibility, accountability, efficiency, “India tweeted at the United Nations with a 10-minute video on India’s trip to the United Nations.

In the video, TS Tirumurti, Permanent Representative of India to the United Nations, said: “India’s journey with the United Nations is quite remarkable. As a founding member of the United Nations, the contribution of l “India’s implementation of the objectives of the United Nations Charter and the evolution of the programs of the United Nations specialized agencies have been substantial in many respects.”

“I am convinced that at some point we are about to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the United Nations and later the 75th anniversary of India’s independence in 2022. India’s presence on the Council security will help to publicize our philosophy that the world is one family Vasudev Kutumbakam, “he said.

Elections for the five non-permanent seats of the UNSC are scheduled to take place on June 17, with India being one of the candidates. India would run for the seat of non-permanent member whose term is 2 years, starting in January 2021.

Others in the fray are Canada, Djibouti, Ireland, Kenya, Mexico and Norway.

India would run unopposed for the Asia-Pacific seat, while Mexico would run unopposed for the Latin America and Caribbean seat. For a seat in Africa-Djibouti and Kenya compete for one another and for the other two seats in Western Europe and others – three countries, Canada, Ireland and Norway compete for one another.

India, one of the founding members of the world body, was elected non-permanent member of the Council on 7 occasions during the years 1950-1951, 1967-1968, 1972-1973, 1977-1978, 1984-1985 , 1991-1992 and more recently in 2011-2012.

The UNSC has 15 members, including 10 non-permanent and 5 permanent.

The UNSC, made up of 193 members, annually organizes elections to elect five non-permanent members for a two-year term at the United Nations.

Apart from that, there are five permanent members of the Council: China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States.

Before the elections, the Ministry of External Affairs last Friday launched a brochure describing the priorities of the Indian campaign.

“Ten years after our last election to the United Nations Security Council. We face four very different challenges for international peace and security,” said Foreign Minister S Jaishankar, speaking to the media.

“First, the normal process of international governance is under increasing tension as friction increases. Second, traditional and non-traditional security challenges continue to grow unchecked. Terrorism is the most blatant of these examples. Third, global institutions remain underrepresented, making them less able to deliver. Fourth, the COVID-19 pandemic and its severe economic repercussions will test the world like never before, “he added.
