India, after a 35-year hiatus, has assumed the chairmanship of the Governing Council of the International Labor Organization, the Ministry of Labor and Employment said on Friday.
Apurva Chandra, Secretary (Labor and Employment) has been elected chair of the Governing Body of the International Labor Organization (ILO) for the period October 2020 to June 2021, according to a ministry statement.
“Apurva Chandra will chair the next Board meeting to be held in November 2020. In Geneva, he will have the opportunity to interact with senior officials and social partners from member states. It will also provide a platform for participants to assess the transformational initiatives taken by the government to eliminate rigidities in the labor market, in addition to clearly expressing its intention on the universalization of social security to all workers, whether in the organized sector or not ”, indicates the press release.
Mr. Chandra, 1988 Indian Administrative Service (IAS) Officer Maharashtra Executive Officer spent over seven years in the Indian Government’s Ministry of Oil and Natural Gas. Chandra worked for over four years between 2013 and 2017 as Principal Secretary (Industries) in the government of Maharashtra.
Mr. Chandra joined as Director General (Acquisition) at the Ministry of Defense from December 2017. He also chaired the committee responsible for drafting the new defense procurement procedure. The 2020 defense acquisition procedure entered into force on October 1.
