Patna:
The embankment repair work along the Indo-Nepalese border in Bihar has been negatively affected as barricades erected by the neighboring nation prevent personnel from crossing to complete the work, Minister of Water Resources Sanjay said Monday Kumar Jha.
Barricades were erected along the border by the two sides during the COVID-19 lockout period, he said.
“We have learned that many parts of Nepal are still closed. However, we are not sure why they suddenly raised concerns about our long-standing repair work,” said the minister.
Jha, who is a close associate of Bihar’s chief minister, Nitish Kumar, expressed his concern at the “unprecedented” development.
“Gandak’s dam has a total of 36 gates, half of which fall on our side. The repair of these was completed by our engineers and their assistants. However, when they tried to go to the other side to do the necessary for the 18 remaining doors, whose maintenance is carried out by us, they found the barricades, “the Bihar Minister of Water Resources told PTI.
Jha said there is “no immediate danger” to Bihar areas prone to flooding due to this development.
However, it is essential that the work is completed for the 36 gates, as the state is located downstream and could be affected if the embankments are drilled due to waterlogging in Nepal’s watersheds, he said. -he declares.
“I will write a letter to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) requesting its intervention in this matter. Access is also denied to a 500-meter-long stretch on an embankment on the Lal Bakeya river. The Nepalese authorities maintain that “He’s falling into no man’s land. But the mud structure has been around for three decades,” said Jha.
The minister said that Bihar officials also could not complete the repair of an embankment on the Kamla river.
“All of these hiccups may not be a problem immediately. But the vulnerability to flooding will remain in place for four months. If this situation persists, the state could suffer,” said Jha.
He also said that “our district magistrates concerned are in talks with the Nepalese authorities and are trying to reason with them so that the impasse is resolved amicably”. “Nevertheless, updates on the embankments at the border are regularly shared with the MEA and the ministry of Jal Shakti,” said the minister.
The development comes at a time when relations seem to have deteriorated between India and Nepal following a dispute over the areas along the border falling into the hill state of Uttarakhand.
Recently, the Indian ambassador to Nepal was summoned and received a note to protest the construction of a road that would connect the Lipulekh pass to the town of Dharchula in the Pithoragarh district of Uttarakhand.
