New Delhi:

India and China on Friday agreed to a “swift and complete” disengagement of troops from friction points in eastern Ladakh, saying the full restoration of peace and quiet in border areas was essential for the overall development of bilateral relations.

The two countries discussed the situation in the region in a new round of online diplomatic talks under the Working Mechanism for Consultation and Coordination (WMCC) on border affairs.

The talks took place amid reports that the disengagement process did not progress as planned following the latest round of marathon talks at corps commanders level on July 14.

The Foreign Office (MEA) said the two sides agreed in talks on Friday that another meeting of their senior army commanders could take place soon to work out new measures to ensure full disengagement “in soon as possible”.

“They agreed that the rapid and complete disengagement of troops along the Line of Effective Control (LAC) and de-escalation of the border areas between India and China in accordance with the bilateral agreement and protocols and full recovery peace and quiet were essential for a harmonious overall development. bilateral relations, ”he said in a statement.

The MEA said the two sides noted this was in line with the deal reached between the two special representatives during their phone conversation on July 5.

National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi had a nearly two-hour telephone conversation on July 5 to ease tensions between the armies of the two countries in eastern Ladakh.

The two sides began the disengagement process from July 6 following discussions between Mr. Doval and Mr. Wang, special representatives for the border issue.

In Friday’s talks, the EAJ said the two sides agreed it was necessary to “sincerely” implement the agreements reached between the top commanders in their meetings to date.

“The two sides agreed that another meeting of senior commanders could take place soon in order to work out new measures to rapidly ensure full disengagement and de-escalation and the restoration of peace and tranquility in the border areas,” added the MEA.
