Indore:

The coronavirus epidemic and the resulting economic downturn forced an engineer and 15 graduates from Khargone in Madhya Pradesh to work in a project of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA), a program originally planned for rural people poor while preparing for public service exams.

Sachin Yadav (24), a civil engineer from a poor family, says he wants to become an assistant collector but the lack of jobs during the lockout forced him to work in an MGNREGA project of digging a pond in the village of Gowadi, 150 kilometers from Indore.

“I passed my civil engineering exams in 2018-19. Before the lockdown, I stayed at Indore and prepared for the Madhya Pradesh Public Service Commission (MPPSC) exams because I wanted to become an assistant collector. However, my coaching class closed due to the epidemic and I came back here after being stranded in Indore for a while, “he told PTI on Tuesday.

“I prepare for the exams in addition to working in the village as a worker, a choice I made because there is no other means of employment. I have been working here for more than a month and I receive Rs 190 for an 8 hour shift every day, “he added.

Mr. Yadav said that experience had taught him that no job is small and that he was better absorbed than wasting time ruining the COVID-19 crisis and the difficulties it caused.

An official from the Indore unit of the Ministry of Information and Diffusion in the field of the Union Office said that 15 graduates are also employed in the MGNREGA project in Gowadi with Mr. Yadav.

“They have degrees in arts and sciences, etc. However, they come from poor backgrounds and therefore work in MGNREGA programs while preparing for competitions,” said the official.
