The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) seized nearly 234 kg of opium from Rajasthan, the “largest” seizure this year to date, and arrested two people on charges of drug trafficking, the agency said on Friday. .
The seizure was made on July 19 in the village of Shadi in the district of Chittorgarh (state).
“A team from the Jodhpur Zonal Unit raided the living quarters of one person, R Lal, and seized 233.97 kg of opium. Another person, MP Dhakad from Bhilwara District, was also arrested, ”NCB Deputy Director (Operations) KPS Malhotra told Delhi. .
The agency also seized a sports utility vehicle (SUV) as part of the operation, he said.
“This is the largest opium seizure of the year in the country. A preliminary investigation has revealed that the opium originated from the legal cultivation area of Chittorgarh and was destined for Jodhpur,” he said. he declares.
The shipment belonged to drug traffickers based in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan, Malhotra said.
Opium is dried latex obtained from the seed capsule of the opium poppy and is chemically treated to produce heroin.
The Central Narcotics Bureau, which reports to the Union’s Ministry of Finance, allows its legal production in three states – Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh.
Mr Malhotra said the investigation into the latest case revealed that some legal growers, especially those in Mandsaur, Neemuch and Ratlam districts of Madhya Pradesh and Chittorgarh and Jhalawar districts in Rajasthan, were diverting opium through illegal channels and sold it to middlemen for profit.
“These intermediaries transport this opium to other parts of the country for consumption and conversion into heroin,” he said.
