A team from IIT-Kharagpur has developed an AI-based system to monitor social distance in public spaces

Kolkata:

A group of researchers from IIT-Kharagpur has developed an artificial intelligence-based cyber-physical system to monitor social distancing in public places, an official said on Saturday.

The team, under the leadership of Professor Debashish Chakravarty and Professor Aditya Bandopadhyay, have designed a low-cost device that can detect the gap between individuals, said an IIT-Kharagpur spokesperson.

“The device emits a proximity alert sound via the audio output, whenever a violation of social distancing standards occurs. It captures images of the view on the ground and calculates the distance according to the criteria set by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, “said a member. of the research group said.

The researchers focused on the ease of deploying such a device in remote locations and reducing costs by using inexpensive and easily accessible hardware, he said.

The students developed the device using readily available equipment during the lockout, said the spokesperson.

The system has been successfully tested by installing three prototypes of the device on the IIT-Kharagpur campus.
