Srinagar:

Hundreds of people joined in funeral prayers for policeman Altaf Hussain in Srinagar who died today while trying to protect a BJP leader during a terrorist attack.

Terrorists attacked Ghulam Qadir, head of the BJP and member of the panchayat in Ganderbal, last night. Constable Altaf repelled the attack and killed one of the attackers. During the shooting, the policeman was shot in the chest. He was transferred to a hospital where doctors declared him dead.

Resident of Eidgah Srinagar, police said Mr. Altaf had shown exemplary bravery and courage in pushing back and killing the terrorist before giving life.

He is survived by his parents, his wife and a one year old son.

As the body reached its home in Eidgah, dozens of people came out to mourn Altaf’s death.

Previously, a wreath laying ceremony was held at the Srinagar district police lines to pay tribute to the deceased gendarme.

“He fought courageously and killed the terrorist, who was a close associate of Reyaz Naikoo – the commander of Hizbul Mujahideen who was killed in May.
