Bhubaneswar:
The human trial of India’s first indigenous vaccine candidate “Covaxin” began Monday at the Institute of Medical Sciences and SUM Hospital in Bhubaneswar.
Covaxin, the vaccine developed by Bharat Biotech, was given to several people, who volunteered to participate in the trial, said Dr E Venkat Rao, principal investigator of the trial process.
The vaccination was performed after the volunteers had undergone a rigorous screening procedure.
“There was a lot of enthusiasm among the people who volunteered for the trial,” he said.
The Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR), which is collaborating with Bharat Biotech on vaccine development, has selected 12 medical institutes across the country. The IMS and SUM hospital is the only such institute in Odisha to have been chosen for this purpose.
Those interested in volunteering for the project can contact the institute by registering online at ptctu.soa.ac.in in the Clinical Trials Register section.
However, volunteers must be disease-free and can screen themselves through a simple questionnaire available on the same website, according to a statement from SUM Hospital.
