A huge explosion rocked the Lebanese capital Beirut on Tuesday, rocking buildings, smashing windows and sending a huge plume of smoke into the sky, AFP correspondents said.
Lebanese media released images of people trapped under rubble, some bloodied, after the massive explosion, the cause of which was not immediately known.

The loud explosion in the Beirut port area was felt in large parts of the city and some neighborhoods lost electricity.
According to preliminary reports from local Lebanese media, the explosion may have been the result of an incident at the port of Beirut.
“The buildings are shaking,” tweeted one resident, while another wrote: “A huge, deafening explosion has engulfed Beirut. It was heard from miles away.”
Online images from a Lebanese newspaper office showed blown-out windows, scattered furniture and demolished interior panels.
