Pithoragarh:
Helicopters have landed heavy road-building machines on the difficult Himalayan terrain of the Johar Valley in Uttarakhand to accelerate the construction of the strategic Munsiyari-Bugdiyar-Milam route near the Indo-Chinese border, said an official.
After several unsuccessful attempts in 2019, the Border Roads Organization (BRO) recently managed to transport heavy road construction equipment by helicopter to Laspa, which gives hope for a faster completion of the route, said the chief engineer. by BRO, Bimal Goswami.
The lack of heavy stone-cutting equipment at Laspa, near the 65 km highway alignment site, delayed its construction.
The Munsiyari-Bogdiyar-Milam road, which is under construction in the upper Himalayan region of the Johar valley in the Pithoragarh district of Uttarakhand, will be a link to the last posts on the Indochinese border.
“After several unsuccessful attempts last year, this month we succeeded in landing helicopters carrying heavy machinery in Laspa. We now hope that the cutting work on this difficult section will be completed within the next three years” said Mr. Goswami.
It will now be easy to cut hard rock, which stands directly on a 22 km section of the road, because heavy equipment can be transported on site by helicopter.
“The construction of the road started in 2010 with an amount of Rs 325 crore sanctioned for the project,” said the chief engineer of the BRO.
He said that the road is under construction at both ends and that with the exception of the 22 km hard section, cutting work has been completed on 40 km of the road.
