New Delhi:
An area of low pressure formed north of the Andaman Sea is likely to intensify into a depression and move to the east coast, causing heavy rains from Odisha to Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka and Telangana on Sunday and Monday, the Indian Meteorological Department warned.
He said the area of low pressure formed this morning and is likely to develop into a low within the next 24 hours. A low pressure zone is the first stage of any cyclone, but not every low pressure zone has to intensify into a cyclone.
However, cyclones usually form in the Bay of Bengal and hit the east coast in October. Under the influence of this low pressure area and cyclonic circulation, light to moderate rains are likely in most places with heavy showers in isolated places on the Andaman and Nicobar Islands on Friday and Saturday.
From Saturday, rains will also hit Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Rayalaseema, the interior of Karnataka and Marathwada. It will intensify in areas except Rayalaseema on Sunday and Monday, IMD said, adding that the seas are also expected to be rough.
Fishermen were advised not to venture into the Andaman Sea and east-central Bay of Bengal on October 9-10, along and off the coast of Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, from Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry and on the Gulf of Mannar from Sunday morning to Monday noon. “Fishermen at sea in the Bay of Bengal are advised to return to the coast,” IMD said in a statement.
