The monsoon trough is moving towards the foothills of the Himalayas, said the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) in its latest bulletin. While Kutch, the Saurashta region of Gujarat and northern Maharashtra are likely to benefit from a respite from the incessant rains and waterlogging, very heavy rainfall is expected in Assam, Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh during the two next days.
the monsoon the trough is “very likely to move gradually north along the Himalayan foothills over the next 24 hours,” said IMD. It will bring heavy rain in Uttarakhand, eastern Uttar Pradesh, the foothills of West Bengal and Sikkim in the next three to four days.
The western end of the monsoon trough is south of its normal position and its end is close to its normal position at mean sea level. It is very likely that it will gradually move north along the foothills of the Himalayas over the next 24 hours.

The bureau also warned of a “thunderstorm and intense lightning” in Uttrakhand, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, eastern Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Assam, Meghalaya, Konkan Coast and Goa over the next 12 hours.

The monsoon is now 14% surplus but a monsoon is expected in most parts of the country, with the exception of the Himalayan foothills, where floods and landslides are expected.
Heavy rain and landslides closed the Badrinath road today and earlier this week the Gangotri road was also closed due to landslides.

The monsoon has also been active in Jammu and Kashmir. National Disaster Relief Force personnel rescued a woman on Wednesday who was trapped on the banks of the Tawi River as the river level rose due to heavy rain.
