New Delhi:
The state of health of former Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi has become “extremely critical”, said doctors overseeing his treatment for post-Covid complications over the past month.
Mr Gogoi has been on life support for two days and his condition, doctors said, worsened further on Monday morning.
The 86-year-old congressional leader became “completely unconscious” on Saturday afternoon after having difficulty breathing. He had also suffered multiple organ failure. He has been put on life-sustaining machines, with doctors at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital using a mixture of drugs and dialysis to revive his organs.
Mr Gogoi’s state of health improved slightly on Sunday when he showed positive signs such as “spontaneous movements of the hand and eyes”, the doctors said, adding that he had become “semi- conscious “, but his urine output remained a cause for concern.
On Sunday, the superintendent of Gauhati hospital, Dr Abhijit Sarma, said that although Mr Gogoi was “hemodynamically stable”, the next 24 hours would be critical to his recovery.
Mr Gogoi’s health is being monitored in consultation with experts from India’s First Institute of Medical Sciences in Delhi who have ruled out the possibility of moving him out of state with this condition.
Tarun Gogoi had tested positive for the novel coronavirus disease on August 25 and was admitted to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital the next day. He had recovered from COVID-19 and was released from the hospital after two months.
Earlier this month, on November 2, he had to be readmitted due to post-Covid complications and was put on non-invasive ventilation until his condition deteriorated on Saturday.
