Criticizing BJP MP Tejasvi Surya for his recent comments that Bengaluru has become “the epicenter of terrorist activity,” former chief minister HD Kumaraswamy said on Tuesday that the remark is a disgrace for the city, which “does ‘not belong to the activists.
The leader of the (secular) Janata Dal added that the statement was even an “insult to senior BJP leaders” and demanded an apology from the “concerned BJP leader”.
“Some people with links to terrorist organizations were arrested after the DJ Halli incident. Our criticism must be against them … not the home of millions of people … Bengaluru does not belong to militants, c ‘is ours … Bengaluru is our pride,’ reads Mr Kumaraswamy’s tweet to Kannada.
He was referring to an incident of popular violence on August 11 when more than 3,000 people went on a rampage, torching the residences of Congressman Akhanda Srinivasa Murthy and his sister Jayanthi, in addition to the police stations of DJ Halli and KJ Halli in Bengaluru.
Without naming the BJP leader, he added: “The insult made by some commentators within the BJP that Bengaluru is a center of terrorist activity is a disgrace for the city. I saw in the media how CM BS Yeddyurappa struggled to justify such a statement, during a press conference on Monday. This slanderous statement is also an insult to senior BJP leaders. “
A day after becoming president of the youth wing of the BJP on September 26, Surya said that Bengaluru had become an epicenter of terrorist activity and that he urged Union Home Minister Amit Shah to create a permanent division of the National Investigation Agency.
The statement drew strong criticism from the opposition. Previously, Congressional DK Shivakumar had asked the BJP to dismiss him from his new post.
