Flexible standards for PPE manufacturers for filtering half masks, surgical masks and eye protectors

New Delhi:

The government has relaxed standards for internal testing of three types of personal protective equipment (PPE) to promote the supply of quality equipment during the current COVID-19 pandemic, according to an official order.

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has relaxed the standards for filter half masks, surgical masks and eye protectors.

Previously, a license to manufacture these products had been granted to those who had in-house testing facilities.

This standard has been relaxed and manufacturers are now required to test samples for the specified requirements in the laboratories of BIS licensees who have internal testing facilities, or in private or government laboratories recognized or enhanced by BIS, a he added.

“This was done to allow more manufacturers to be integrated into the BIS product certification system, which in turn will result in more BIS certified PPE being made available to users” , said BIS.

The BIS is a national standardization body reporting to the Ministry of Consumer Affairs. He has overseen more than 25,000 quality standards for different products / services.

Based on data obtained from 81 mask manufacturers, BIS said it had been found that their production capacity for current annual 2-ply / 3-ply surgical masks was 295 crores.

Currently, hand masks and disinfectants have been declared essential items until June. Its prices are set by the government.
