Google will block election ads on its platform after the US election on November 3.

Alphabet Inc’s Google will block election ads on its platform after the Nov. 3 U.S. election, a company spokesperson said on Friday.

Axios, which first broke the news, said Google sent a letter to advertisers saying they would not be able to run ads “referring to the candidates, the election or its outcome, given that an unprecedented number of votes will be counted after election day this year. “

Social media companies face increasing pressure to stop running ads that spread false information and could steer election results.

Facebook Inc also said it would stop accepting new political ads in the week leading up to the election and reject ads seeking to claim victory before the election results are announced.

Twitter Inc banned political ads last year, after Google previously limited the means by which election advertisers could micro-target voters.

Google’s new policy will target ads that are explicitly election-related, as well as any other type of ads that refer to federal or state elections, or ads served based on the targeting of election-related search queries, according to the report. Axios.
