Rain in central and southern India is expected to accelerate next week, said the Met department.

New Delhi:

The rains in central and southern India are expected to accelerate from next week due to cyclone traffic which is expected to form over the Bay of Bengal and contribute to the progress of the monsoon, announced on Friday Indian meteorological department.

IMD Director General Mrutunjay Mohapatra said a low pressure area should form over the Bay of Bengal and head for Odisha next week.

Low pressure is cyclonic circulation and the first step in any cyclone. However, it is not necessary for each low pressure to intensify in a cyclone.

“This will help advance the monsoon and bring good precipitation over the next week,” said Mohapatra.

The monsoon had hit Kerala on June 1 on its normal start date. IMD previously predicted that the monsoon would be delayed by four days, but Cyclone Nisarga helped push the monsoon to reach Kerala on its normal start date.

“Conditions are becoming favorable for the further advancement of the southwest monsoon in other parts of the central Arabian Sea, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Pondicherry and Karaikal in the south west and east-central Bay of Bengal, all of south-eastern Bay of Bengal and parts of central west bay of Bengal for the next 2 days, “said IMD.

According to the MeT department, the country as a whole has received 9% more precipitation than normal since June 1.

The plains of northern India will also experience rainfall due to a disturbance in the west, IMD said.

A western disturbance is a cyclonic circulation which has its source in the Mediterranean Sea. It crosses Central Asia and brings rains to the hills and plains of northern India after being in contact with the Himalayas.

Eastern Uttar Pradesh and eastern Rajasthan are also likely to experience rainfall, added the IMD.
