Jakarta:

A French national detained in Indonesia, suspected of assaulting hundreds of children, has died by apparent suicide, police said on Monday.

François Camille Abello, 65, was found unresponsive last Thursday inside his cell in a Jakarta detention center, police spokesman Yusri Yunus said.

“After three days of treatment, he was pronounced dead,” Yunus told reporters on Monday.

Umar Shahab, an official with the Jakarta National Police Hospital, said doctors reported that the French retiree had a broken neck and that the injury had blocked the oxygen supply.

The retiree was arrested last month in a Jakarta hotel with two minor girls in his room.

He was paraded Thursday in handcuffs wearing an orange prison shirt and a black mask at a police press conference.

Police said they found videos on Abello’s computer showing him engaging in illegal sex with more than 300 children aged 10 to 17 years old.

They said he would approach the children and attract them with job offers as models. Those who refused to have sex were beaten.

Abello was sentenced to life imprisonment, chemical castration or even execution by an execution platoon if found guilty of numerous charges under Indonesian child protection laws.

The French Embassy in Jakarta, contacted by AFP, declined to comment on the case.
