Former Odisha congressman Kartikeswar Patra dies at 79

Veteran Congress leader and former MP Kartikeswar Patra has died from a brief illness, family sources said. He was 79 years old.

Kartikeswar Patra, who was also a writer, is survived by his wife Umarani, a former MP, three daughters and a son, they said.

He had been ill for the past few days and died while taken to Bhubaneswar for treatment late Monday night, they added.

A multifaceted personality, Kartikeswar Patra was elected three times to the Odisha assembly in 1971, 1974 and 1980 in the constituency of Bhograi in the district of Balasore.

He was also elected to Lok Sabha from Balasore constituency in 1991.

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik and other dignitaries mourned the death of Kartikeswar Patra.

He was also closely associated with several social and cultural activities.

Author of several books, the former legislator was intensely engaged in research work on culture and literature.
