Shimla:

Former CBI director Ashwani Kumar, who was found hanged at his Shimla residence, was cremated in a crematorium here on Thursday.

His son Abhishek lit the pyre.

A number of people including Himachal Pradesh Energy Minister Sukhram Chaudhary, Congress Legislative Party Leader Mukesh Agnihotri and former State Congressman Sukhvinder Sukhi, and relatives of Mr. Kumar witnessed the cremation.

The 69-year-old former CBI director, who led the agency in investigating several high-profile cases including the 2008 Aarushi murder case in Noida, reportedly committed suicide at his residence on Wednesday from Brockhurst, near Chhota Shimla.

A preliminary inquiry has indicated that a sudden change in Mr Kumar’s working life over the past six months due to his home confinement could be the reason for his decision, but police said they were reviewing all the probabilities.

An IPS officer from 1973, Kumar became director of the Central Bureau of Investigation in 2008. He also served in the Special Protection Group, which mainly guards the Prime Minister, and was appointed governor of Nagaland in 2013 by the government of the UPA.
