Floodwaters in Assam receded in another district on Friday, even as 21 people continued to be inundated with lives lost and 10.83 lakh people affected by the flood, an official bulletin said.

Flood waters receded from Sonitpur district even though it remained in 21 others, the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) report said. The districts still affected by the flood are-Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Biswanath, Darrang, Baksa, Udalguri, Nalbari, Barpeta, Chirang, Bongaigaon, Kokrajhar, Dhubri, Goalpara, South Salmara, Kamrup, Kamrup Metropolitan, Morigaon Golor, Jhatagahaton, Majuli and Sivasagar districts.

Another person died in Gossaigaon, Kokrajhar district, bringing the total number of people who lost their lives in this year’s floods and landslides to 135 statewide, of whom 109 were killed in flood-related incidents and 26 died as a result of landslides.

As of Thursday, more than 12.01 Lakh people were affected in 22 districts.

Goalpara remains the hardest hit with around 3.41 lakh people in pain, followed by Morigaon with over 2.22 lakh people and Dhubri with almost 28,000 people.

Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal visited Sadiya on Friday and provided an update on measures taken by the Department of Water Resources to stop erosion caused by the Kundil River on National Highway 37.

Speaking to the media, Sonowal pointed out that erosion of the Kundil rivers this year threatens to sever Assams road links with other northeastern states like Arunachal Pradesh and water resources departments, measures timely could save the affected part of the road and the bridge.

The ASDMA bulletin added that a total of 17 out of 223 camps in Kaziranga National Park, six of 40 camps in Rajiv Gandhi Orang National Park and 12 of the camps in Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary were disrupted by the flood.

The flood has so far claimed the lives of 145 different animals, while 169 more have been rescued in Kaziranga National Park, the bulletin said citing the DFO of the East Assam Wildlife Division.
