New Delhi:
A meeting of farmers in Delhi ended abruptly today due to the absence of the Minister of Agriculture. The meeting was held with the Secretary of Agriculture but the farmers demanded the presence of Union Minister Narendra Singh Tomar.
Distraught at his absence, farmers began to raise slogans inside the ministry and tore up copies of the disputed farm laws. They also said their agitation against the contentious farm laws will continue.
Under the new laws, farmers are allowed to sell produce anywhere in the country and deal directly with big business – a situation that farmers have found alarming.
Most feel that they would be left at the mercy of the companies and that with the phasing out of APMC markers from agricultural wholesale, they will not even get the minimum support price for their products.
