Police said an investigation had been opened and efforts were underway to arrest those responsible for the incident.

Baruipur:

Jewelry worth lakhs and 50,000 rupees in cash was robbed in a house near Kolkata on Saturday after most family members had to be admitted to hospital with COVID-19, announced the police.

The incident occurred early in the morning in the Pujali district of Paraganas Sud 24 district, they said.

Four family members are hospitalized after being tested positive for COVID-19, police said.

They were tested and found positive after a family member died recently of the disease, said a senior police officer.

A woman and a child were at home when the incident took place, he said, adding that they were sleeping.

The woman noticed the burglary after waking up in the morning, he said.

The burglars broke in and decamped with gold ornaments worth several lakhs and 50,000 rupees in cash from the house, the officer said.

Residents alleged that despite the fact that the area was declared a containment area, there was no police patrol.

Police said an investigation had been opened and efforts were underway to find those responsible for the incident.

A similar incident occurred in a house in the same neighborhood a few days ago after all the members of this family were taken to a quarantine center.

“We are verifying the operation of the gang involved in the incident and hope to find them soon,” said the officer.
