Washington:

Facebook posted an informative warning on Tuesday on a post from President Donald Trump claiming that postal voting would result in a “corrupt” election.

The move, without removing the post, appears to follow the social media giant’s pledge to step up efforts to tackle disinformation, including from world leaders, by stepping slightly away from its policy of no -intervention on political discourse.

Trump wrote on his page that postal voting, unless changed by the courts, “will lead to the most CORRUPTED election in our nation’s history!” and added the hashtag #RIGGEDELECTION.

Facebook added an informational tag that read, “Get official voting information on how to vote in the 2020 US election” with a link to the government sponsored USA.gov page on how to vote.

Facebook has largely held firm to a policy that it will not verify the facts of political leaders, but it has pledged to remove any posts that could lead to violence or mislead people about the process of vote.

He recently promised to add tags to posts that would normally be removed for violating the platform’s rules, but left online as “newsworthy,” like Twitter.

A coalition of activists urged Facebook to be more aggressive in removing hateful content and disinformation, including from the president and political leaders. Some 1,000 advertisers have joined a boycott aimed at increasing pressure on Facebook.
