A 4.2 magnitude earthquake struck Thursday about 2 km north of the Los Angeles community of Pacoima, the US Geological Survey said. There are no reports of damage immediately.
Although relatively small in magnitude, the quake, which struck at 4:29 a.m. Pacific time (11:29 a.m. GMT), was felt across much of the Los Angeles area, according to social media. A second magnitude 3.3 earthquake struck nine minutes later, according to the survey.
People on social media have reported feeling the quake in areas such as North Hollywood and Sherman Oaks, with some saying they haven’t received a #ShakeAlert message on their phones.
“I smelled it in Sherman Oaks! We woke up to a restful sleep. No phone alerts, however,” Twitter user Joe Hubbard said.
Another Twitter user, Lee A Houck, said he received an alert after the start of the quake.
