Indore:
Seven people have been arrested for allegedly smuggling 117kg of hashish, worth Rs 6 crore into the international market, from Nepal, the Tax Intelligence Directorate (DRI) said Thursday.
The contraband was being transported to Tamil Nadu when it was seized in Madhya Pradesh’s Narsinghpur district by DRI officials, the central agency said.
Acting on a denunciation, a drive was launched Tuesday and Wednesday in which two cars were intercepted on a road in the district of Narsinghpur from where 117 kg of hashish were seized, ”said a statement from DRI.
The smugglers had hidden the contraband in specially designed compartments in the two cars which were registered in Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, he said.
The drug consignment was brought to India from Nepal and taken to Tamil Nadu via Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh, the statement said.
The estimated value of the drug seized was Rs 6 crore on the international market, DRI said.
Seven people were arrested by the DRI for smuggling and charged under the Narcotics and Psychotropic Substances Act (NDPS Act), the statement said.
An investigation is underway, he added.
