Washington:
Donald Trump has no guiding principles and is not fit to be president, said his former national security adviser, John Bolton, in an interview published Thursday to promote his explosive book.
“I don’t think he is fit for the job. I don’t think he has the skill to do the job,” Bolton told ABC News.
The Trump administration is working to stop the publication of the memoirs, “The Room Where It Happened,” claiming that it contains classified documents.
In the book, excerpts of which were published Wednesday by three newspapers, Bolton alleged that Trump had asked Chinese President Xi Jinping to help him get re-elected, expressed support for the mass incarceration of Uighur Muslims and other minorities in Beijing and largely ignored the world.
“There is really no guiding principle that I could discern other than what is good for the re-election of Donald Trump,” Bolton told ABC News in the interview, which will air in its entirety on Sunday.
“I think he was so focused on re-election that longer-term considerations were abandoned,” he added.
Bolton highlighted Trump’s awareness of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, saying Trump is obsessed with “the photo op and press reaction” rather than long-term US interests.
Bolton, a veteran Republican insider, is well known for his hawkish views on North Korea – one of the main reasons for his departure from the White House in September.
