Washington:
US President Donald Trump announced Monday that he will resume his television briefings on coronaviruses, saying he wants to tout positive news even as the pandemic spreads across the country.
“I think it’s a great way to get information out to the public,” he told reporters at the White House. “We are doing very well in many ways.”
Trump said he would likely start on Tuesday.
The White House organized dozens of information sessions on coronaviruses during the first two months of the pandemic, but abandoned them in late April.
Trump has often turned what was presented as an opportunity to provide information to the anxious audience into heated exchanges with journalists in the room.
He then angrily abandoned the events after a briefing in which he drew widespread ridicule for meditating on the air about the possibility of injecting a household disinfectant to combat COVID-19.
He later said he spoke “sarcastically”, although there was no evidence of that at the time.
The president has always sought to minimize the severity of the health crisis, saying it would “disappear” on its own.
But with the virus on the rebound, crossing Florida and other large states, he finds himself accused of not having taken the lead.
He is also down in polls against his Democratic presidential challenger Joe Biden in November.
Trump said the briefings would focus on good news regarding vaccine development and therapeutics.
“We think we are doing very well in this regard,” he said. “I think I’m going to bring in some of the big companies that are working very well.”
“We really find very good answers,” he said.
Trump has indicated that he will once again dominate the proceedings, likely at 5:00 p.m. when the television audience increases.
“We had very successful briefings. I did them and we had a lot of people watching, recording numbers. In the history of cable TV, there has never been anything like it.”
