WASHINGTON:
President Donald Trump said on Saturday that he would announce new visa restrictions in a few days to block the entry of certain foreign workers and protect Americans from a job market devastated by the coronavirus pandemic.
“We will announce something tomorrow or the next day on visas,” he told Fox News Channel.
When asked if there would be exclusions from the new restrictions, Trump replied very little.
“You need it for big companies where there are people who have been coming for a long time, but very little exclusion and they are quite tight,” he said. “And we can even go very tight for a while.”
Trump, who was to announce new restrictions, declined to provide further details.
Critics have said Trump seems ready to use the pandemic to achieve his long-standing goal of limiting immigration to the United States. His firm stance on immigration is at the heart of his speech to voters as he runs for office.
Big US companies, particularly in the tech sector, have urged Trump to refrain from blocking the flow of foreign workers to the United States, saying it will hurt the economy.
The new action would be Trump’s last step to restrict immigration in response to the pandemic and the economic fallout.
In April, he ordered a temporary ban on permanent residence in the United States for certain foreigners.
He also announced in March new health-focused rules that allow the rapid expulsion of immigrants caught at the border and virtually cut access to the U.S. asylum system.
At the same time, he announced that the land borders with Canada and Mexico would be closed to spurious crossings, a measure that has been repeatedly extended.
