“Sad to hear of the passing of former Indian President Pranab Mukherjee,” Donald Trump tweeted

New Delhi:

US President Donald Trump offered his condolences to the family of former President Pranab Mukherjee and the people of India upon his death hours after his Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, in a statement, said the “visionary leadership” of the veteran had helped bring the two countries closer together.

“I was saddened to learn of the passing of former Indian President Pranab Mukherjee. I extend my condolences to his family and the Indian people as they mourn the loss of a great leader,” Donald tweeted Trump.

Earlier today, Mike Pompeo said in a statement: “Sad to learn of the passing of former Indian President Pranab Mukherjee, whose visionary leadership has helped bring the United States and India closer together. We extend our deepest condolences to the Indian people at this difficult time. “

The former president, who had tested positive for coronavirus, died on Monday, weeks after his brain surgery. The 84-year-old had died after being hospitalized for 20 days. The seven-time parliamentarian’s funeral was held today with full military honors and the center announced an official seven-day mourning period.

The former president – described by many as the oldest statesman in Indian politics – has been mourned by political leaders at all levels.

India’s 13th President, Pranab Mukherjee, received the Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian honor, in August last year.
