New Delhi:

The opposition used to “make fun” of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s digital campaign in India, but the exercise turned out to be a “boon” during the coronavirus pandemic because the benefits were directly sent to people who need it, said Union Minister Smriti Irani on Wednesday. .

Speaking at a “virtual gathering” for Uttarakhand, she said the money had been transferred to more than 20 crores of Jan Dhan bank accounts and that the poor had received a free ration for three months.

Thousands of people have also received benefits as part of the Rs 1.7 lakh crore package announced by Narendra Modi, she said.

“The opposition made fun of the Digital India slogan given by Prime Minister Narendra Modi six years ago. But now Digital India turns out to be a boon during this global pandemic,” she said.

People’s confidence in government has increased under Prime Minister Modi as they receive their social benefits directly into their bank accounts unlike earlier, she said.

Speaking to Congress, she said that most of the money for development was previously lost to corruption.
