Invoices from the agricultural sector: Farmers in Punjab plan to block the tracks for 3 days.

New Delhi:

As the Punjab farmers’ unions began their three-day “Rail Roko” protest on Thursday against the three agricultural sector bills in Amritsar and Firozpur districts, others called for a “Bandh” statewide on September 25 and starting October 1. In view of today’s protests, the Firozpur Rail Division canceled 14 trains affecting the state’s connectivity with Mumbai and Nanded in Maharashtra, Kolkata and New Jalpaiguri in West Bengal, Jaynagar in Bihar and Haridwar in the ‘Uttar Pradesh.

Growing calls to protest amid Punjab’s coronavirus pandemic indicate that while the bills may have been passed in parliament, farmers – who fear the bills will mean the end of the system of minimum price support (MSP) once purchases begin outside mandis – are not in the mood to accept them.
