Uttar Pradesh’s Hathras neighborhood, which is in the center of national attention after a teenager died in a brutal assault last month, witnessed another protest on Tuesday after the death of ‘an alleged rape victim.

The underage girl died at Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi on Monday, 15 days after being raped by her maternal cousin in Aligarh, police chief Vineet Jaiswal said.

She used to stay with her maternal aunt in Aligarh, while the family belonged to Hathras.

After his death, family members and villagers blocked a road in the neighborhood, alleging inaction by a police officer in Aligarh.

Mr Jaiswal said she was allegedly raped by her underage cousin about 15 days ago. “The boy is also mentally ill. A case was registered at the local police station, after which the accused was detained and brought to a juvenile court,” he said.

Mr Jaiswal added that his family had grievances against a junior police official, which were resolved, after which they put an end to the roadblock.

“Sadly, the girl died yesterday (Monday) at Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi. The family brought the body to Hathras for final rights, after which they blocked a road. They had complaints against the SHO. The administration of Aligarh was informed and they took appropriate action against the OHSS. Now the situation has been brought under control and the family has performed their final rites, ”he said.
