Ahmedabad:
Demonetized banknotes with a face value of 4.76 crore rupees were recovered in the town of Godhra, Gujarat, and two people were detained in this regard, police said today.
The two men were arrested following a raid by the Godhra Police Special Operations Group (SOG) on Tuesday evening, according to a statement released by the state’s Counterterrorism Squad (ATS). The ATS had given a clue about it.
During the raid, the police caught Zuber Hayat and Farookh Chhota. However, the main defendant, Idrish Hayat, managed to escape during the operation, he said.
Based on specific information that some people were involved in illegal scrappage ticket transactions, the Godhra SOG first raided a location near Med Circle and recovered five packages of these banknotes. ‘a denomination of Rs 1000 from Chhota, he said.
After his interrogation, the SOG team reached the Dhantya Plot area in Godhra and found several wads of old banknotes hidden in a car and a house belonging to Idrish Hayat and his son Zuber.
While Idrish managed to escape, his son was arrested by police, ATS said.
The police collectively recovered 9,312 notes of Rs 1,000 and 76,739 notes of a denomination of Rs 500, with a total face value of Rs 4,76,81,500.
Idrish Hayat already faces similar charges and has been missing for two years in a previous case. The Godhra SOG will conduct a further investigation into what the accused planned to do with these notes, which were dropped by the government in 2016, ”Panchmahal Police Commissioner Leena Patil said.
