New Delhi:
Delhi surpassed Tamil Nadu on Monday to become the second country most affected by coronavirus in various states and territories of the Union, according to data published by the respective governments.
On strengthening the containment strategy, Delhi chief secretary Vijay Dev ordered officials to implement all of the interior ministry’s directions, including remapping the containment areas and finding aggressive contacts.
As of Monday, the number of cases of coronavirus in the national capital was 62,655 cases, slightly higher than that of Tamil Nadu (62,087). Maharashtra has 1,35,796 cases, the highest in the country.
Even by the number of deaths, which was 2,233, Delhi ranks second among the states and territories of the Union
With the increase in cases, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal announced that his government would give pulse oximeters – devices that measure blood oxygen levels – to COVID-19 patients in home isolation and said the number of coronavirus tests has increased three times in Delhi.
At an online press conference, Kejriwal said in the past week that there has only been an increase of 1,000 cases of active coronavirus, indicating that the COVID-19 situation slowly stabilizes in the city.
From June 15 to 22, Delhi reported 21,473 cases of coronavirus. However, 20,379 people also recovered from the disease in the nation’s capital during this period. If the sharp increase observed last week continues, Delhi could well overshadow Mumbai to become the city with the largest cases of coronavirus. Mumbai has 67,375 cases.
In the past three days, Delhi has recorded 3,000 or more cases daily – June 19 (3,137), June 20 (3,630) and June 21 (3,000).
On Monday, he reported 2,909 new cases. The city has 23,820 active cases. With 58 new deaths, the number of deaths was 2,233.
Earlier this month, the Delhi High Court observed that the national capital was heading to the country’s “corona capital”.
Kejriwal said the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government is getting “enough support” to stop the spread of COVID-19 in Delhi.
“We will give pulse oximeters to COVID-19 patients in home isolation. Each district will have oxygen concentrators. Delhi will soon have a helpline and our team will go to the homes of patients recovering from disease to provide oxygen, “said Mr. Kejriwal.
Patients can return the pulse oximeters to the government after they have fully recovered, he added.
The coronavirus affects the respiratory system, causing shortness of breath and a drop in the level of oxygen in the blood.
Kejriwal said that 18,000 coronavirus tests are currently performed daily in the city. Just a few weeks ago, approximately 5,000 COVID-19 tests were carried out daily in the national capital.
With the help of the Center, antigen tests, which give results in 30 minutes, have also been launched in Delhi, said the chief minister.
A high-level committee set up by the Minister of the Interior, Amit Shah, had recommended the quarantine of the contacts of all the positive cases for COVID-19 in Delhi and a new cartography of all the containment zones to check the propagation rapid coronavirus infection in the nation’s capital.
In a meeting with Kejriwal, Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal and others, Shah suggested on Monday that these recommendations be accepted by the Delhi government, after which the chief secretary of Delhi issued instructions.
“The chief secretary gave instructions to the principal secretary (Health) and to the divisional commissioner to scrupulously apply all the instructions of the MHA (ministry of the interior) to fight vigorously against COVID-19, including an reinforced surveillance, a new containment mapping, improved testing, aggressive monitoring and patient-friendly medical care, “a source said on Monday.
The committee had recommended that the containment areas be redrawn and that strict surveillance and control be maintained at their borders and activities inside, the interior ministry said in a statement.
He also suggested that contact tracing be done for all infected people and once identified, those contacts should be quarantined.
Chief Minister said Delhi has so far not needed beds for COVID-19 patients on a large scale as most of them have recovered from the disease, adding that the number of serious patients is also lower in the national capital.
Kejriwal said that as of June 12, a total of 5,300 beds were occupied in all hospitals in the city.
“6,200 beds are currently occupied, which means only 900 more occupied in the last 10 days … 7,000 beds are still available.
“This means that the number of new coronavirus patients admitted to hospitals is almost the same as the number of people recovering from the disease and returning home,” said the chief minister.
There was chaos a few days ago regarding the availability of beds, he said, while claiming that his government had worked on war to increase the number of hospital beds public and private.
Meanwhile, 17 detainees from Mandoli prison tested positive for the coronavirus. This occurs a few days after the death of a coronavirus from a 62-year-old inmate who shared his cell with him.
Director General (Prisons) Sandeep Goel said that of the 29 detainees tested for COVID-19, 17 were positive.
