New Delhi:
October was the coldest month in 58 years in the nation’s capital, according to data from the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD).
The average minimum temperature in October this year was 17.2 degrees Celsius, the lowest since 1962, when it was 16.9 degrees Celsius, IMD said.
Normally Delhi records an average minimum temperature of 19.1 degrees Celsius in October.
Delhi recorded a minimum temperature of 12.5 degrees Celsius on Thursday – the lowest for October in 26 years. The last time Delhi recorded such a low temperature was in 1994.
The nation’s capital recorded a low of 12.3 degrees Celsius on October 31, 1994, according to IMD data.
The normal minimum temperature for this time of year is 15 to 16 degrees Celsius, IMD said.
Kuldeep Srivastava, head of IMD’s regional forecasting center, said the lack of cloud cover was one of the main reasons for such low minimum temperatures this time around.
The clouds pick up some of the outgoing infrared radiation and project it downward, warming the ground.
Another reason is the calm winds, which allow the formation of fog and fog, Srivastava said.
Delhi had recorded its historic low temperature of 9.4 degrees Celsius on October 31, 1937, he said.
