New Delhi:
A Delhi court on Tuesday summoned the CBI co-director responsible for overseeing the investigation into an alleged corruption case involving the roles of two former directors of the investigative agency.
The case concerns a corruption case against meat exporter Moin Akhtar Qureshi and others. The roles of two former CBI directors – AP Singh and Ranjit Sinha – are under scrutiny with Qureshi in the affair.
Special Judge Sanjeev Aggarwal summoned the investigator (IO) of the case after the agency requested more time to file another situation report, which was requested by the court on September 26.
The court had, on the last date of the hearing, asked the CBI why it was “dragging its feet” in the case. This “may lead to a conclusion that she (CBI) is not very keen to continue investigations” concerning them, she said.
While asking for more time on Tuesday, the agency said: “The new situation report could not be filed because the investigator had been in training for some time. Subsequently, he examined five witnesses and still needs more time to respond to the questions raised by this tribunal at the last hearing date. “
“Time granted in the interests of justice,” the court said.
The judge said: “The CBI was expected to respond frankly to the questions / questions raised by this tribunal on a provisional basis as of the last court date, given that some of the questions relate to the role of two of its alumni, directors AP Singh and Ranjit Sinha as well as the alleged middleman Moin Akhtar Qureshi. “
However, given the special circumstances, let the investigator as well as the co-director, who is overseeing the investigations into this case, be summoned for the next court date to answer questions, the judge said.
The court released the case for a new hearing on November 17.
The court had, on the last court date, asked whether Sinha’s name was also under investigation and “if so, whether it had also been considered in this case, if not why?”
“Why did the CBI not lead the investigation into this case to a logical end using proven investigative methods such as searches, in-custody interrogations of potential suspects?”
“The alleged role of his other ex-manager, Alok Verma, has also been investigated according to which he blocked or did not allow investigations to reach its logical end during his tenure. “, asked the judge to the CBI.
He also asked why A P Singh had not been examined in this case.
“Why CBI is dragging its feet in a case involving the roles of two of its ex-directors, which can lead to deduce that it is not very keen to continue investigations as them”, had posed the court .
The CBI had filed an alleged corruption complaint against Qureshi in 2017.
