A 42-year-old Delhi traffic policeman who previously tested positive for COVID-19 saved the life of a gravely ill colleague by donating his blood plasma, police said on Wednesday.
The donor, Chief Constable Vipin, had been stationed at the Seemapuri circle since June 15. He was previously attached to the Delhi Parliament roundabout and tested positive for COVID-19 on April 30 while on duty in the field, they said.
Police said he was admitted to the ESI hospital in Sahibabad, Uttar Pradesh, and was released on May 13 after recovering from the infection. He then remained in quarantine for 14 days at his home in Vaishali until May 27, then resumed his duties.
An inspector with a rare O (-) ve blood group, who had tested positive for the coronavirus and was admitted to the AIIMS in Delhi, needed plasma for his recovery. Chief Vipin was informed and accepted. Even though he felt weak, he became a savior for the critically ill inspector, “said Traffic Eastern Range Deputy Commissioner Anjitha Chepyala on Monday.
AIIMS Director Randeep Guleria also praised the police chief for voluntarily donating his blood plasma to a COVID-19 patient and issued a certificate of appreciation, police said.
