Hathras:

The main accused in the alleged gang rape and torture of a young Dalit woman in Hathras, Uttar Pradesh, wrote to the Uttar Pradesh police, claiming that he and the other three accused were charged in the case and demanded “justice” for the four men. . He also accused the woman’s mother and brother of torturing her.

The letter emerged amid police allegations that there is evidence that the victim’s family knew one of the accused.

Sandeep Thakur, who is in prison with the three others, wrote a letter to the police in Hathras, claiming that he and the 20-year-old woman were “friends”. “Outside of meetings, we used to talk on the phone every now and then,” he wrote in a handwritten letter in Hindi on Wednesday. The letter has the thumbprints of the four accused.

UP police had claimed that call tapes revealed the woman’s brother was in contact with Sandeep Thakur. Some 104 calls were made between the brother and Sandeep Thakur from last October to March, police said.

Sandeep Thakur, in his letter, alleged that his family did not like their friendship. “The day of the incident, I had gone to meet him in the fields that day when his mother and brothers were also present. I returned home after being invited by her to do so. So I started to feed the cattle, ”he said.

“I later learned from the villagers that her mother and brothers had beaten her because of our friendship, seriously injuring her. I never beat her or did anything wrong with her. Her mother and his brothers falsely accused me and three others and sent us We are all innocent. I ask you to investigate and get us justice, “he said.

A senior officer at Aligarh prison, where the defendants are located, confirmed that the defendants wrote a letter to the Hathras police. “They sent their letter to the Hathras Police Superintendent last night. By law, we sent it to the Hathras Police Superintendent … They presented their version. Now the investigative agencies will see Alok Singh, senior superintendent of Aligarh prison, told reporters today.

The victim’s father denied the accused’s allegations. “I lost my daughter. Now they are trying to slander us. We are not afraid. The allegations are totally false. We don’t need to want compensation or money. We want justice,” he said. the woman’s father told GalacticGaming.

The woman was assaulted by four upper caste men from her village on September 14. She died last Tuesday of the terrible injuries caused by the attack; she had multiple fractures, spinal injuries, a broken neck and a gash in her tongue.

Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra condemned the new claims and theories that have emerged. “To create a narrative that defames the character of a woman and to hold her in some way responsible for the crimes committed against her is revolting and regressive,” she tweeted, adding that the woman deserves “justice and not slander”.

On Wednesday, a special investigative team or SIT, set up by Yogi Adityanath’s government, had 10 more days to deliver its findings. The three-member team interviewed the woman’s brother. “We have no contact with them. We only have one phone at home. If the police have audio of calls, they have to produce them,” he said.
