New Delhi:

Elected officials should be banned from holding public office for five years and failing to stand in the next election if they fail, said chief lawyer and congressional leader Kapil Sibal on Saturday.

Sibal, who was addressing a webinar, said that the “endemic” of defection is due to human greed and the thirst for power.

His remarks come at a time when the ruling Congress in Rajasthan is facing a rebellion from Sachin Pilot and members of parliament who are loyal to him. A few months earlier, legislators from the party led by Jyotiraditya Scindia had defected to the BJP in Madhya Pradesh, which had led to the collapse of the government of Congress.

“No law can prevent it (defection). The only solution is that if someone fails in their duties, they will not be able to hold a public office for five years and will not be able to stand in the next elections. two things that need to change, ”Sibal said in response to a question on the political crisis in Rajasthan.

Speaking on the college appointment system, Sibal said that even judges are human and are influenced by personal likes and dislikes.

“You see, even if you give power to the government, they will abuse it,” he said.

When a person becomes a judge of the Supreme Court, he must reveal his personal tastes and aversions. “But over the years, that does not happen,” he said.

The Congress leader also spoke on matters relating to questions of faith and personally stated that he believed that the superior court should not have dealt with the Sabarimala temple case.
