“Cyanide” Mohan, 57, convicted of murder on Saturday (Performance)

“Cyanide” Mohan, a serial killer who murdered several women using the deadly chemical after having befriended and raped them, was sentenced to life in prison by the court for rape and the murder of a Kerala woman in 2009.

The sixth district and additional sitting judge, Judge Sayeednunnisa, pronounced the sentence on Wednesday.

Mohan, 57, was convicted of murder on Saturday.

The case is the 20th and the last in the series of murder cases against him.

Previously, he had been sentenced to death in five cases and to life imprisonment in others. Two of the death sentences were later commuted to life imprisonment.

In this case, Mohan had been charged with inducing a 25-year-old woman from Kasargod to accompany him on the promise of marriage, and had taken her to Bangalore.

He stayed in a lodge with the woman, raped her and killed her the next day, giving her a pill containing cyanide, making her believe that it was a contraceptive pill.

He used the same mode of operation in the 20 cases against him.

The judge sentenced to life imprisonment and a fine of 25,000 rupees for murder under article 302 of the International Criminal Code, ten years and 5,000 rupees for kidnapping, 10 years and 5,000 rupees for feeding a poison , seven years and 5,000 rupees for rape, five years and 5,000 rupees for jewelry theft and imprisonment and fines for cheating and destroying evidence.

The court interviewed 46 witnesses, 89 documentary evidence and 31 assets.

Among the gold ornaments removed by Mohan, a pendant was recovered from the residence of his second wife, which was to be given to the mother of the victim.
