New Delhi:

A 20-year-old woman, who tested positive for coronavirus at AIIMS in Delhi, reportedly escaped hospital, even as her husband filed a missing person’s complaint despite knowing where she was was, police said on Wednesday.

Police said the woman went to the Indian Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) on October 18 because she was not well. She was tested for the infectious disease and was found positive.

Hospital staff asked her to be admitted to the dedicated COVID center, but she escaped from there, they said.

Meanwhile, the woman’s husband filed a complaint with the police alleging that his wife is missing, police said.

During the investigation, it was found that the woman, after leaving the hospital, had managed to reach her rented house in the village of Zamrudpur, south of Delhi. Fearful of being caught, she left for her maternal home, a senior police official said.

“Her relatives, however, said she had not arrived at her mother’s house,” he said.

Police said the woman’s husband knew she tested positive for COVID and had escaped from AIIMS. He filed the missing person’s complaint to mislead the police.

A case has been registered under the relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code for “disobeying an order duly promulgated by an official” and “act of negligence capable of spreading a life-threatening disease” at the Grand Kailash police station.

“The case is currently under investigation and teams have been set up to locate the couple,” said Deputy Police Commissioner (South) Atul Kumar Thakur.

Once the woman is found, more details will be clear, he said.
