Ahmedabad:

Hours after performing the final rites of a 71-year-old man who died as a “coronavirus suspect”, his relatives received a call from a government hospital in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, saying that his sample had been tested negative and , therefore, they should move it to a non-COVID service.

The call sowed panic and confusion among the relatives of the deceased Devram Bhosikar who wondered if they had cremated the right person because they had not seen the face since the corpse was wrapped in accordance with COVID-19 protocol .

The Gujarat Cancer Research Institute, where the man died, however, had correctly confirmed his identity.

“On the afternoon of May 28, I admitted my stepfather to the GCRI trauma center. From there, he was transferred to the COVID service and his sample was taken for the test. On the second day, I received a call from COVID saying my father was fine, “said his son-in-law Nileshbhai.

“Shortly after, I received another call and was told that his condition was critical and that I was needed at the hospital. I insisted on connecting with him via video call where he said he was fine. Shortly after, I received a call from the hospital informing me of my father’s death, “he said.

At the time of death, the family had not received the coronavirus test report, he added.

The family then received a call from a hospital operator on May 29 at night to inform them that the man’s report was negative and that they should now transfer him to the non-COVID service of the hospital. ‘establishment.

“We wondered if we had performed the last rites of our father or anyone else because we had not seen his face,” said the son-in-law.

In a statement, Shashank Pandya, director of the GCRI, said that there was no truth in the allegation that relatives had been returned to the body of another person.

“Devram Bhosikar was admitted to hospital on May 28 and suffered from a cough, breathing difficulties and his relatives said he had been suffering for the past four days. According to his chest x-ray, he was probably suffering from pneumonia and was already in serious condition, “said Mr. Pandya.

“In accordance with the COVID-19 protocol, we collected his swab for coronavirus testing. On May 29, he died before his COVID-19 report was even available. He was considered a suspected coronavirus case because that he was showing symptoms and therefore, his last rites were performed according to protocol, “he said.

“His coronavirus report was received at 10:30 a.m. on the night of May 29. His parent was informed.

The man in the control room has no idea of the patient’s last condition and therefore informed relatives that they could transfer the patient from COVID service to normal service, which confused them, ” he said in a statement.
