In a sudden spike, the number of coronavirus-related deaths in West Bengal has climbed to 36 today, bringing the total number of deaths in the state to 1,112. Since July 5, the number of deaths has remained in the twenties to the highest peak of a day.
Of the 36 deaths, Kolkata reported 15 and while North 24 Parganas saw 9 deaths. This comes as the number of new cases has risen to 2,278 today, 80 more than on Saturday. So far, 42,487 people have been infected in the state.
Hooghly reported four deaths, Howrah and South 24 Parganas reported three each, and Purba Medinipur and Paschim Medinipur each reported one death.
The total number of active cases in the state is 16,492.
In the past 24 hours, 1,344 people have recovered from the disease, while 13,471 samples have been tested, according to a statement from the state health department.
The positivity rate has reached 6% today. As of July 1, it was 3.85%. The rejection rate fell to 58.56% – it was 65.35% on July 1.
The Health Department bulletin said today that 83.1% of patients who died from Covid-19 suffered from comorbidities. 15.6% of the deaths were over 75 years of age.
There has been a marginal increase in the number of public hospital beds for COVID-19 patients in the state. Out of 11,179 beds, 7,070 are vacant. In the private sector, the number of beds is 1,882, of which only 222 are vacant. Out of 38 hospitals, 21 have no vacant beds.
The government plans to add 15,000 beds by August 31.
Tight lockdowns have been enforced in large state containment areas until July 31.
